Job Description

Summary

The Department of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant to assist in planning, conducting and supervising neuroscience research projects. The candidate will join the Laboratory of Neural Circuit Modulation. The main mission of the lab is to make fundamental discoveries about the inhibitory circuits that control brain activity, and to invent neuromodulatory intervention strategies to treat epilepsy.

 

 

Job Duties

  • Designs and conducts laboratory research experiments in rodent models, using approaches such as in vivo microscopy, video-EEG recording, and immunostaining.
  • Documents and interprets results of experiments in an electronic lab notebook.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator (Barna Dudok) in protocol and grant preparation and submission and other administrative tasks.
  • Assists with processing budget and expense reports, and other financial documents in SAP and Concur.
    May assign activities to less experienced and/or new research staff.
  • Trains new lab personnel in procedures and best practices, including serving as surgical Training Ambassador.
  • Orders supplies and equipment needed for rodent stereotaxic surgery, including regular maintenance of gas anesthesia equipment.
  • Coordinates compliance-related activities, such as inspections and reports, for chemical- and biosafety, IACUC, laser safety, and controlled substances.
  • Manages the regular preventative maintenance of capital equipment (-80 freezer, vibratome).
  • Controls the procurement and breeding of research animals. Designs and validates genotyping probes, forecasts and reports experimental animal needs, and oversees the setup of breeding animals.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Experience or strong interest in Neuroscience.
  • Experience with laboratory research related to rodent models.
